Agriculture: Israeli delegation (Mashav) arrives in Myanmar

Israeli Minister of Agriculture Yair Shamir, accompanied by the Head of MASHAV arrived in Myanmar for a first official ministerial visit in 35 years aimed at strengthening relations between the two countries in the field of agriculture.

The delegation met with the Vice President of Myanmar and with high-level officials including the Minister for Agriculture and Livestock of Yangon Region Government at the Minister’s office who gave a brief review on the regional agricultural sector, including difficulties such as floods in rainy season which the local farmers are facing. Both sides discussed the possibility of future collaboration in the fields of water management, irrigation systems, crops, seeds and post-harvest.
The Israeli delegation also offered its assistance in setting up an Israeli Agriculture Technology Demonstration Centre in Yangon, where farmers can experience advanced technologies and methods in different areas of agriculture.
During his visit, Minister Shamir inaugurated a joint Myanmar-Israel Agriculture Technology Seminar in Yangon, in the presence of the Minister for Electric Power and Industry of Yangon Region Government, U Nyan Tun Oo, who mentioned the advanced Israeli agriculture technology, methods and knowledge which can useful to Myanmar, an agriculture based country. The seminar was attended by officials from the local Ministry of Agriculture and Irrigation and representatives from local agriculture companies, which had an opportunity to meet their Israeli counterparts.
